Pretend you had up to $10K to spend on a car, which car would you purchase and why? (By which I mean, what should Rachel and I get).

Used mileage restrictions? Mpg preferences?
@AndrewFerguson A ROTH IRA to make up for the 40% cut in the retirement benefit.
I would start by setting aside half the money for rims and a sound system.
My vote would be a Suburu or Toyota– if you’re thinking about having kids ever/in the next five years, you want to think about any size requirements (do you want a sedan or something bigger like a wagon).
Erik Thybërg:
Used Milage: Lower it better, probably not looking at anything over 100K.
MPG: At least 25 MPG combined (not EPA, but bona fide 25 MPG).
Also, what car do you drive? That will impact my ruling. 😉
Until recently: 2001 Subaru Outback Wagon and 2007 VW Jetta.

Which one are you keeping?
Neither.
Are you legitimately going down to one car, or getting two new ones?
At this point we are legitimately at zero cars and getting at least one “new” one.
I would say you want to decide whether you’re getting one or two before you choose what to get. You want more versatility if you have one car.
what happened to the old ones?
Quinn McGinnis: So let’s say the second option is up to $17K for two cars.
Eddie Muanda: Long story short: sold one and then involved in an accident with the other.
Parking isn’t very good around your place. I would get one car, clear out the garage, and park it in there.
Honda Accord or CRV. We have both and bought them used but certified with low miles. Plus they hold their resale value.
Quinn McGinnis: It’s 10x worse where I used to live (one block from Green Lake).
I don’t doubt it. Still, for me at least, driving home and wondering how long it’s going to take to park my car is stressful/annoying. #firstworldproblems
Quinn McGinnis: Which is why we all need George Jetson cars that fold up into briefcases.
I would also think about how long you want to have this car, and what gas prices might be like toward the end of that time period.
Since 1985 I have nothing! except Toyota Tacoma, 4Runners, and one Land Cruiser
So I am totally biased, but I am not convinced of a better value. Honda and Subaru seem to be a close 2nd
Toyota is essentially used exclusively in Haiti because of their renowned reliability…especially LandCruisers
Subaru for reliability and value. Almost everyone I know who has done their homework when buying a new car in the last year has ended up with a Subaru. I think the Impreza is a great size and value. Not sure if you can get a used one with the new CVT for that price though.
