Project 42: Q & A

The times they are a-changin’.

This post seems to be older than 17 years—a long time on the internet. It might be outdated.

Questions (from Alec Turnbull) and answers (from me):

Q: What’s a “Dead Man’s Trigger”?
A: Most triggers require an action in order to activate it (e.g. pressing down on the button). A dead man’s trigger (or switch) requires an action to *not* activate it. The point being that if we get lost or hurt or captured and do not check in with the ‘trigger’, the trigger (in this case) will automatically send out a message alert people to our last known location and presumed destination.

Q: Why all the secrecy?
A: It’s the nature of Project 42

Q: Will you be an equal participant in project 42? Or more of an overseer?
A: I am merely a participant with an idea of what I want it to be. Project 42 is a common effort with a goal (hopefully) shared by all. What actually happens is ultimately up to the group.

Q: Is the 42 of P42 from Hitchhikers Guide?
A: Yes and no. I’m still working on the basic guidelines/rules and I’m hoping to incorporate 42 of something into it. I hope that Project 42 is also similar to the adventures of HG, if only abstractly.

Q: Has anyone agreed to it yet?
A: No.

Q: How many people do you need to do it for it to be a go?
A: I am going. If I’m the only person, then I’m the only person. Hopefully more people would like to come because I think this will be something very cool. Project 42 is also a journey that can be taken multiple times, so it’s not like this is a one-shot deal. However, the first time is always the best. 😉

Alec Turnbull then goes on to say:
So far I’ve put together this:

  1. The bag restriction is from the need to have a carry on bag as most airlines restrict your carry on size to 45″ approx
  2. The money is for a plane ticket, hence the need for a passport
  3. You’ll be trying to get somewhere, hence the need to be in shape
  4. You’ll need to be able to hike it if you can’t get a ride

…beyond that, I don’t know.

I can neither confirm nor deny any of the above statements

Q: How long do you estimate P42 will take? Would it impinge upon the school year?
A: The actually length of Project 42 is still up in the air, however, it will begin sometime after the end of the regular 2005/2006 school year and before the beginning of the 2006/2007 school year.

Q: Well in that case, I might be interested. Though I’d probably need more convincing
A: Baseball bat and knee caps. Need I say more?
