Okay, I think I figured out what you mean. That was a configuration error on my part (I used a relative URL in my META redirect) and it doesn’t affect the plug-in.
Sorry if I’m being dense, but is it supposed to redirect until the url is too long to handle?

I think something’s gone a bit screwy with awredir.pl … Following one of your example links, such as https://www.andrewferguson.net/cgi-bin/awredir.pl?url=http://1976design.com/blog/error/, the url keeps concatenating “?error=404&referer=(none)&requested=/cgi-bin/index.php” to itself until the server throws a rod and delivers-up a majestic:
