Why TheFacebook Works

The times they are a-changin’.

This post seems to be older than 18 years—a long time on the internet. It might be outdated.

Some people out there are wondering why Facebook is such a phenomenon. There’s really nothing too special about it. It’s just away to see who else goes to your school. However, Facebook has done something innovative that not many other sites do, they authenticate users. In order to use Facebook, you have to have an active email address at the school you are going to. This email address, in short, serves as a ticket to Facebook, without it you can’t sign up. TheFacebook staff also take significant amount of time to research each school before addition to Facebook. Research includes what sort of on campus housing is availible, what majors are offered, what classes are offered and things of the like. This ensure that when a user goes to register and they input that they live in, say, Morgan, there aren’t multiple version of Morgan (such as Morgan Hall or M, or whatever the case may be). This aides in creating an accurate, searchable description for each user. Throw on the fact that the service is free (at least for now) and sites such as Classmates.com don’t stand a chance.
