Music Loophole? A Plea to the Masses

29 Mar 2005 @15:59

Kirk Montgomery, Entertainment Reporter at 9News, reported that a person can legally rip music from a CD to their computer and then sell the CD and keep the music file on their computer. Certain this was incorrect, I quickly emailed Montgomery. He promptly replied:

Thanks for the email. If you own the CD and burn it to your computer and put it on your ipod you can do whatever you want with the CD, sell it, trash it, give it away. You bought it, you can do whatever you wish with it.

While this would be cool, I highly doubt it is true. Can someone, perhaps a lawyer or someone who deals with IP rights, shed some light on this issue?
